Hiroshima

First printing inscribed by Hersey

Hiroshima is a groundbreaking work of journalism by John Hersey that chronicles the experiences of six survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. First published as an article in The New Yorker in 1946, the detailed account was later released as a book. Through personal testimonies, Hersey humanizes the catastrophic event, painting a vivid picture of its immediate aftermath and the longer-term effects on the lives of the survivors. The work remains a seminal piece on the human impact of war and the consequences of atomic warfare, as well as one of the earliest examples of New Journalism.

This copy is signed and inscribed by Hersey on the title page: "For Mika Babcock / The crux of the matter is whether total war is justifiable, even when it serves a just purpose. -- pp 117-118 / John Hersey."
