The Wall
Signed first edition, 2019
The Wall is a near-future dystopian novel by John Lanchester, published by Faber and Faber in 2019. Set in a Britain transformed by catastrophic climate change referred to only as "the Change," the novel imagines a country that has encircled itself with a vast concrete barrier against both rising seas and the refugees, called "the Others," who attempt to cross it. Young people are conscripted for two-year stints as Defenders on the Wall. Those who fail in their duty by allowing Others to breach the Wall are cast adrift at sea, becoming Others themselves.
The novel's narrator, Kavanagh, is one of these Defenders. Lanchester uses his perspective to examine the psychological costs of a society organized around exclusion, and the bitter generational divide between those who experienced the Change and those born into its consequences. The Wall was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2019.
