Amnesia Moon (1995) is Lethem's second novel, a post-apocalyptic road novel in which the nature of the catastrophe has been deliberately left vague. Chaos, a young man living in a movie theater in a ruined Wyoming town under the influence of a local dream-manipulator named Kellogg, escapes and drives west through an America where each region inhabits its own version of what happened, radioactive dust in one town, a green fog in another, an oppressive luck-bureaucracy in the next. Reality has fragmented into competing local fictions, and the further Chaos drives the more unstable his sense of what is real becomes. Signed and inscribed by Lethem on the title page: "For Mika / Who's planning to add to / the shelf of dystopian / novels / I suspect / All best, / Jonathan Lethem."
