Passport to Eternity

Paperback original, 1963
Published as a paperback original by Berkley Books in 1963, Passport to Eternity is a U.S. collection of nine stories by J. G. Ballard. Notable inclusions include “Thirteen to Centaurus” (1962), a generation-ship narrative that ultimately reveals the voyage to be a closed psychological experiment conducted on Earth, and “The Watch-Towers” (1962), a surveillance dystopia in which a city’s population is controlled by silent observers in the sky. The collection also features “Escapement” (1956), one of Ballard’s earliest published stories, which explores a time-loop phenomenon in which a man becomes trapped within a recurring interval of his own consciousness.

This collection includes: “The Man on the 99th Floor” (1962), “Thirteen to Centaurus” (1962), “Track 12” (1958), “The Watch-Towers” (1962), “A Question of Re-Entry” (1963), “Escapement” (1956), “The Thousand Dreams of Stellavista” (1962), “The Cage of Sand” (1962), and “Passport to Eternity” (1962).
