Divergent

Signed first edition, 2011
Veronica Roth's debut novel, set in a dystopian future Chicago where society is divided into five factions, each built around a single virtue: Abnegation (selflessness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), Erudite (intelligence), and Amity (peace). At sixteen, every citizen must choose a faction for life, leaving their family behind if necessary. Protagonist Beatrice Prior chooses against expectation, and during the brutal initiation that follows discovers she is "Divergent," meaning she doesn't fit neatly into any single faction, a condition the authorities consider dangerous. One of the most commercially successful YA dystopian series of the post-Hunger Games wave. Signed by Roth on the title page. Basis for the 2014 film.
