The Ice

Signed first edition, 2017
The Ice (2017) is Paull's second novel, set in a near-future Arctic where the polar ice has retreated dramatically and a new era of corporate resource extraction has opened up the region. Sean Cawson, a charismatic entrepreneur who has built a luxury eco-resort on the Svalbard ice, is the sole survivor of an incident in which his business partner and old friend Tom Harding died. An inquest attempts to establish what happened, and the novel moves between the present-day investigation and the events that preceded it, gradually revealing the environmental compromises and personal betrayals at the center of the story. A pointed examination of how ecological catastrophe gets managed, monetized, and obscured by those with the most to gain from it. Signed by Paull on the title page.
