This Perfect Day

First edition, 1970
This Perfect Day (1970) is Levin's ambitious dystopian novel, less well known than his other work but squarely in the tradition of We, Brave New World, and 1984. Set in a future world state governed by a central computer called UniComp, the novel imagines a society in which every aspect of daily life, from diet and medication to work assignments and sexual partners, is managed and optimized for collective harmony. Citizens wear permanent identity bracelets and receive regular treatments that suppress aggression and nonconformity. The protagonist, known as Chip, begins to resist his conditioning and seeks out others who have done the same. The novel's four-part structure traces his journey from compliance through awareness to open rebellion.
