Renaissance

First edition, 1951
Renaissance is a 1944 science fiction novel by Raymond F. Jones, originally serialized in four parts in Astounding Science Fiction. On the alien world of Kronweld, society is governed through the Karildex, a vast machine that integrates the recorded desires and preferences of the population into a collective will that functions as law. The novel follows Ketan, a Karildex technician associated with the clandestine “Unregistereds,” a group pursuing forbidden lines of inquiry suppressed by Kronweld’s religious and technocratic authorities. As Ketan challenges the mysteries surrounding the Temple of Birth, the Edge, and the origins of his world, the novel expands into a strange mixture of dystopian speculation, metaphysical mystery, and planetary romance. First published in hardcover by Gnome Press in 1951; later reissued in paperback under the title Man of Two Worlds.
