The City of Ember

First edition, 2003
The City of Ember is the first book in the Book of Ember series. The city of Ember is an underground settlement built by its founders to shelter humanity during an unspecified catastrophe, with instructions for eventually returning to the surface sealed in a timed lockbox and passed between mayors for generations. By the time twelve-year-old Lina and her classmate Doon come of age, the city is failing. The generator producing its only light flickers constantly, supplies are running low, and no one in living memory knows anything different. When Lina discovers the corrupted instructions in her family's closet, the two set out to find the way out before the lights fail permanently. One of the more imaginative YA dystopian premises of the post-2000 era, with a genuinely original setting. Basis for the 2008 film. Included with this copy is a promotional outlet cover plate, still shrinkwrapped.
