Hummingbird Salamander
Signed first edition, 2021
Hummingbird Salamander is a near-future thriller narrated by a security consultant who calls herself Jane Smith, living in a Pacific Northwest city as ecological collapse accelerates around her. When a stranger leaves her a key and a storage unit containing a taxidermied hummingbird and clues pointing toward a missing eco-terrorist, Jane is drawn into a conspiracy involving extinct animals, environmental sabotage, and the question of how far one person's guilt about the state of the world can drive them. VanderMeer writes the novel as a kind of elegy for biodiversity, structured as a thriller but operating as something stranger underneath. Signed by VanderMeer on the title page. A signed 5" x 7" tie-in promotional card is also laid in.
