The Land of Darkness - Along with Some Further Chapters in the Experiences of the Little Pilgrim
The Land of Darkness (1888) is a striking allegorical work by Mrs. Margaret Oliphant, one of the most prolific novelists of the Victorian era and a favorite of Queen Victoria herself. The protagonist awakens in a nightmarish afterlife, a harsh, glaring city crowded with the destitute, the sick, and the morally adrift, all trapped in endless purposeless motion driven by self-interest and survival. The vision reflects Oliphant's deep anxieties about industrial society, urbanization, and the spiritual costs of modern life, and stands as an early and largely overlooked example of dystopian allegory. The collection also includes two additional tales, "The Little Pilgrim in the Seen and Unseen" and "On the Dark Mountains."
