Subtitled "An Ambiguous Utopia," it alternates between two worlds: an anarchist society built on radical equality and collective ownership, and a prosperous capitalist planet it broke away from. Neither is presented as the answer. Winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and Locus awards for best novel.
