Blindness (Ensaio sobre a Cegueira) by José Saramago follows the catastrophic spread of a contagious, inexplicable blindness through an unnamed city, and the small group of quarantined survivors struggling to hold onto their humanity as social order collapses around them. First American edition, published by Harcourt Brace in 1998 in Giovanni Pontiero's translation, a year after the scarcer Harvill Press first English edition. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature the same year. Basis for the 2008 film.
