A Little Knowledge
First edition, 1977
A Little Knowledge (1977) by Michael Bishop is set in a future Atlanta enclosed under a dome following the breakup of the United States, governed by a Christian revivalist dictatorship whose church services double as civic functions. The protagonist, Julian Cawthorn, is a young writer assigned to cover the first public appearance of the Cygnusians, alien visitors who have been living quietly in the city. When one of the aliens voluntarily submits to religious conversion at a church service, the event is seized upon as divine validation of the state religion, triggering attacks on minority groups and plunging Atlanta into turmoil.
