Doubting Thomas
First British edition, 1958
Doubting Thomas by Winston Brebner is a satirical dystopia set in a computer-governed state where individuality and humor have been all but extinguished. The protagonist, a magistrate operating within this tightly controlled society, secretly assumes the role of a clown once a year during the State Holiday, using the performance as a private act of resistance and satire. Originally published in the United States in 1956, this first British edition was published by Rupert Hart-Davis in 1958. Noted in the Science Fiction Encyclopedia for its exploration of "the metaphysical pathos of clowning" in a world hostile to spontaneity.
