The Postman

First edition, 1985
The Postman (1985) by David Brin is set in a post-apocalyptic America sixteen years after a catastrophic collapse, where Gordon Krantz, a traveling actor and survivor, stumbles upon the uniform and mailbag of a dead postal worker and assumes the role as a pragmatic disguise. The communities he encounters treat the restoration of mail service as genuine evidence that the federal government still functions, and Krantz finds himself sustaining a fiction that takes on a life beyond his control. The novel is more interested in the power of institutional symbols and collective belief to hold communities together than in the mechanics of collapse. Winner of the Hugo and Locus Awards. Adapted into a 1997 film directed by and starring Kevin Costner.
