Crackpot
First edition, 1977
Crackpot is the fourth novel in Ron Goulart's "Fragmented America" series, set in a near-future United States that has fractured into competing regional entities and is now at war with Mexico. The country is largely automated, with robots handling much of what humans once did. A young reporter newly transferred to the front becomes entangled with the "Crackpot," an eccentric inventor who has built a device capable of seizing control of every robot in the world simultaneously. Goulart works in the tradition of satirical science fiction, mixing slapstick, political lampoon, and malfunctioning machinery.
