VOX

First edition, 2018
Vox (2018) by Christina Dalcher is a feminist dystopian novel set in a near-future United States where a religious nationalist government has restricted women to one hundred spoken words per day, enforced by a wrist device that delivers an electric shock if the limit is exceeded. The protagonist is a neurolinguist who had been working on language-related neurological research before the regime stripped women of their professional roles. The novel drew frequent comparisons to The Handmaid's Tale on publication and was a commercial success. Dalcher's debut. First American edition published by Berkley.
