The Raid of Dover - A Romance of the Reign of Woman: A.D. 1940
First edition, 1910
The Raid of Dover (1910) is a future-war dystopia by Douglas Morey Ford, originally published anonymously. Set in A.D. 1940, the novel imagines England under female political rule, weakened by socialism, pacifism, and the erosion of imperial power. Britain is reduced to a third-rate nation following naval defeat and German military dominance, narrowly avoiding full subjugation only through a desperate act of technological retaliation. Advanced airships, aerial bombardment, and speculative weaponry play a central role. Written as an explicit anti-socialist warning, the book portrays the “Reign of Woman” as a catalyst for national decline. First issue binding in dark brown cloth, according to Locke. A later remainder binding in red cloth was issued as part of The Coronet Library, with the Home & Colonial Stores “compliments” label affixed to the front pastedown. Scarce.
