Dawn of the Dead

Published in 1978 as a tie-in to George A. Romero’s landmark film, Dawn of the Dead is the much less familiar novelization of one of the most influential works in zombie cinema. Written by Romero with Susanna Sparrow, it appeared in both paperback and this scarce St. Martin’s Press hardcover edition. The novel follows television employees Francine Parker and Stephen Andrews and SWAT officers Peter Washington and Roger DeMarco as they escape a collapsing Philadelphia and take refuge in an abandoned shopping mall. After blocking the entrances and destroying the zombies trapped inside, the survivors surround themselves with food, weapons, clothing, and every other comfort the mall can provide. Their apparent sanctuary becomes another trap when armed raiders break into the building and allow the dead in with them.
