 Smoke Signals (1998) is the published screenplay for the independent film written by Alexie and directed by Chris Eyre, based on the story "This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona" from The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. The film won the Filmmaker's Trophy and Audience Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, the first feature film written, directed, and co-produced by Native Americans to receive wide theatrical release.
