The Wind from Nowhere
Paperback original, 1962
Published as a paperback original by Berkley Books in 1962, The Wind from Nowhere is J.G. Ballard’s debut novel. The narrative depicts a global catastrophe in which a hurricane of unexplained origin steadily increases in velocity, stripping the planet's surface and driving humanity into underground bunkers. The climax centers on Hardoon, a wealthy industrialist who constructs a massive concrete pyramid to defy the elements, prefiguring the architectural obsessions of Ballard’s later career, Despite its commercial success, Ballard later dismissed the book as “hackwork” written in ten days to finance his transition to full-time writing, and he often excluded it from his authorized bibliography.
