The second book in the Maze Runner series. The survivors of the Maze are now outside it, only to find themselves delivered into a new phase of WICKED's experiment. Outside is a scorched, nearly uninhabitable landscape called the Scorch, where they must travel one hundred miles in two weeks while contending with both the environment and the deteriorating mental states of those infected by the Flare virus. The trial structure that defined the first novel continues here in a different form, and the nature of WICKED's true purpose becomes more complicated. Basis for the 2015 film.
