Ender's Game

First edition, 1985
Ender's Game (1985) by Orson Scott Card follows Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, a child prodigy recruited into Battle School, a militarized orbital institution that systematically isolates, manipulates, and psychologically molds its students in preparation for an anticipated war against an alien species called the Formics. The institution's methods are deliberately cruel, its commanders fully aware that the children in their care are being damaged in the process, but the adults who run Battle School believe the survival of humanity depends on what they are doing. The institution's methods are deliberately cruel, its commanders fully aware that the children in their care are being damaged in the process, but the adults who run Battle School believe the survival of humanity depends on what they are doing. It is a system that subordinates individual welfare entirely to collective necessity, and Ender has no meaningful consent, no recourse, and no exit. The moral implications of what is done to him, and what he is ultimately made to do without his knowledge, have kept the novel in serious discussion long since its initial publication. Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. Adapted into a 2013 film. First edition, Tor Books, 1985. True first editions are scarce and increasingly sought after.
