"The Revolt of the Pedestrians" in Amazing Stories: February 1928

First edition, 1928
"The Revolt of the Pedestrians" presents a society that has surrendered itself entirely to the automobile over centuries, to the point where human legs have atrophied from disuse, walking has become biological aberration, and pedestrians are hunted under an Extermination Act. The story follows a hidden colony of the last walking humans in the Ozark Mountains across four generations, building toward a confrontation with the automobilist civilization that tried to eradicate them. Written during the height of the Ford Model T era, the story runs directly counter to the prevailing celebration of mechanized progress. It marked Keller's debut in science fiction. First published in Amazing Stories (Vol. 2, No. 11), February 1928, with cover art and illustrations by Leo Morey.
