The Rising
The Rising (2003) is a zombie apocalypse novel by Brian Keene, following a father's journey across the collapsing United States to rescue his young son. Keene departs from the traditional zombie formula with intelligent, organized undead capable of speech, planning, using weapons, and accessing the memories of the bodies they inhabit. The catastrophe is ultimately traced to a scientific experiment that opened a passage to another dimension, allowing ancient entities known as the Siqqusim to possess the bodies of the dead.
