The Rising
Signed limited first edition, 2003
The Rising (2003) is a zombie apocalypse novel by Brian Keene, following Jim Thurmond as he travels across the collapsing United States in search of his young son, Danny. After receiving a desperate phone message from Danny, who is trapped in an attic in New Jersey, Jim leaves the underground shelter where he has survived the first months of the catastrophe and begins a dangerous journey north. Along the way he joins other survivors, including an elderly preacher named Martin and a woman named Frankie, while confronting both the undead and increasingly brutal groups of surviving humans.
Keene departs significantly from the traditional zombie formula. His undead are intelligent and organized, capable of speech, planning, using weapons, driving vehicles, and drawing upon the memories of the bodies they inhabit. The outbreak is eventually traced to an experiment with a particle accelerator that accidentally opens a passage to another dimension, allowing ancient entities known as the Siqqusim to possess the bodies of the dead.
One of 300 special hardcover copies signed by Keene and illustrator Alan M. Clark, this copy #143. The Delirium Books edition is the true first edition, also issued in a deluxe leatherbound edition limited to 26 copies. The Rising was published as a mass-market paperback by Leisure Books the following year and became an early entry in the resurgence of zombie fiction that preceded the genre's enormous popular revival later in the decade.
