Welcome to the Monkey House
Signed first edition, 1968
Welcome to the Monkey House (1968) collects twenty-five short works by Kurt Vonnegut, including three of direct dystopian interest. "Harrison Bergeron" is set in a future America where the government enforces absolute equality by handicapping anyone whose intelligence, beauty, or physical ability exceeds the average, enforced by a Handicapper General whose agents monitor compliance. The title story imagines a society managing overpopulation through state-mandated drugs that suppress sexual desire, alongside a network of Ethical Suicide Parlors promoted as a civic good. "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow," originally published as "The Big Trip Up Yonder" in Galaxy Science Fiction in 1953, is set in a world where an anti-aging drug has produced centuries-long lifespans and the overpopulation that follows.
