Radicalized is a collection of four novellas by Doctorow, each examining a different near-future crisis. The standout for dystopian purposes is "Radicalized," in which a man whose wife is denied cancer treatment by her insurer is drawn into an online community of men in similar situations, radicalizing toward vigilante violence against healthcare executives. "Unauthorized Bread" depicts a refugee living in a smart apartment building whose appliances stop working when the manufacturer goes bankrupt, a sharp satire on corporate control of everyday life. The other two novellas deal with a Superman-style figure confronting the limits of individual heroism, and a bunker-dwelling tech billionaire facing the consequences of the collapse he prepared for.
