Little Brother is a YA cyber-thriller set in a near-future San Francisco in the aftermath of a terrorist attack on the Bay Bridge. Seventeen-year-old Marcus Yallow is detained and interrogated by the Department of Homeland Security, then released into a city that has been converted into a surveillance state. Using his technical knowledge and a network of young allies, Marcus mounts a resistance using encryption, hacked Xboxes, and underground networks. Doctorow grounds the novel in real cryptographic tools and civil liberties arguments, making it as much a primer on digital privacy as a work of fiction.
