The Messenger

Messenger (2004) is the third book in the Giver Quartet, set in Village, the community introduced in Gathering Blue, where Jonas, now known as Leader, has established a refuge for outcasts and the displaced. Matty, a young man with a hidden gift, serves as the community's messenger into the surrounding Forest. The Forest is changing, becoming hostile, and Village itself is turning inward, its people trading away pieces of themselves for things they want. Matty's final journey into the Forest is the novel's closing arc.
