Gathering Blue
Signed first edition, 2000
Gathering Blue (2000) is the second book in Lowry's Giver Quartet, though it is set in a different community entirely, a primitive, brutal village where the weak are discarded and survival depends on usefulness. Kira, a girl with a twisted leg who would ordinarily be left to die, is saved by her rare gift for embroidery. She is taken to the Council of Guardians and given the task of restoring the Robe of Gathering, a ceremonial garment embroidered with the village's history. As she works, she begins to understand what the Guardians actually are.
