Logan's Run (1967) by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson is set in a future America where a youth-dominated society has solved the problem of overpopulation through mandatory death at the age of twenty-one. Citizens wear crystals embedded in their palms that change color as they approach their Lastday, and those who attempt to flee rather than submit to termination are hunted by DS men, enforcers trained to kill runners. Logan is a DS man nearing his own Lastday when he is assigned one final mission: to locate and destroy Sanctuary, the mythical refuge for those who have escaped the system. The assignment turns him into a runner himself, and his flight toward Sanctuary, accompanied by a woman named Jessica, forms the basis of the novel. Basis for the 1976 film by Michael Anderson, starring Michael York and Jenny Agutter. Scarce original hardcover first edition. Signed and inscribed by co-author George Clayton Johnson on the half-title page to Anthony Sauber, executive vice president of business and legal affairs at Universal Studios for over twenty-five years.
