The Black Man

Black Man (published in the United States as Thirteen) is set in a twenty-second-century world where genetic engineering has produced a variant human type, the "thirteens," engineered for aggression, independence, and self-sufficiency. These traits proved useful in conflict but made thirteens difficult to integrate into peacetime society, and most have been exiled to Mars or confined to reservations. Carl Marsalis, a thirteen working as a bounty hunter for the UN, is sent to track down a renegade of his own type who has returned to Earth on a rampage. Morgan uses the premise to examine what it means to be constitutionally unsuited to the society you were born into.
