Ambient (1987) is Jack Womack's debut novel and the first entry in his Dryco sequence, a loosely connected series set in a near-future New York controlled by the Dryden Corporation. The city is violent, stratified, and deteriorating, and Womack's prose style is compressed, idiomatic, and already showing the slight mutations from standard English that would become a signature of the series. The novel follows Whiting, a bodyguard to the head of Dryco, as the corporation's grip on the city tightens. This British first edition precedes the American.
