Let's Put the Future Behind Us (1996) is a departure from the Dryco sequence, set in post-Soviet Moscow during the chaotic early days of Russian capitalism. The narrator, Dmitry, is a former KGB operative turned opportunist, navigating a city where criminal enterprise, Western cultural invasion, and bureaucratic corruption have replaced communist ideology with something no less absurd. Womack uses the setting as a darkly comic lens on what happens when an ideological system collapses and is immediately replaced by unfettered greed. Less overtly dystopian than the Dryco novels, but recognizably Womack in its sardonic view of systems that degrade the people who live inside them.
