Signed first edition, 2021
Scorpion (2021), published by Random House, is Cantrell's first book published in hardcover. CIA analyst Quinn Mitchell, still processing the death of her daughter, is assigned to a series of murders that follow an encoded numeric pattern across multiple countries. The investigation leads to the Epoch Index, a cryptic message embedded in data from the Large Hadron Collider, whose origin and function neither Quinn nor the agency can explain. The novel's dystopian dimension is atmospheric rather than structural, a near-future surveillance state presented as an unremarkable background condition rather than an explicit subject of critique. More techno-thriller than dystopia proper, it rounds out the collection as a companion to the Children of Occam books and Kingmaker.
