Puttering About in a Small Land

First edition, 1985
Puttering About in a Small Land is a mainstream novel by Philip K. Dick, written in 1957 and published posthumously in 1985. Set in the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles, it follows Roger Lindahl, who runs a television repair shop, and his complicated entanglement with the Bonner family, whose son attends the same boarding school as Roger's stepson. The novel tracks two marriages coming apart under the slow pressure of dissatisfaction and attraction, with the small-business milieu of mid-1950s California rendered in close, unglamorous detail. It belongs to the group of mainstream novels Dick wrote throughout the 1950s alongside his science fiction, almost none of which found a publisher during his lifetime. First published by Academy Chicago Publishers in 1985.
