Neuromancer (1984) by William Gibson is the novel that crystallized cyberpunk as a literary mode, presenting a future shaped not by governments but by megacorporations, black markets, and artificial intelligences operating beyond human scale. The story follows Case, a burned-out hacker whose nervous system has been deliberately damaged, exiling him from the virtual realm that gave his life its only coherence. When offered the chance to regain access to cyberspace, he is drawn into a covert operation involving rogue AIs, corporate dynasties, and the unstable boundary between human and machine consciousness. Neuromancer won the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick Awards, the only novel to receive all three. The true first edition, issued as a paperback original by Ace Books in July 1984, preceding all hardcover editions.

William Gibson's Neuromancer opens in the Chiba City underworld with a line that has become one of the most quoted in science fiction: "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel." Case is a burned-out hacker whose employers destroyed his nervous system with a military-grade mycotoxin, cutting him off permanently from the virtual world he lived in. Cyberspace is the only world he cared about. Cut off from the virtual world that gave his life its only meaning, he has been spending the months since on a self-destructive crawl through the bars and black markets of Night City. 

A way out is offered by Armitage, a figure of uncertain origin and opaque motives, who offers to repair Case's neural damage in exchange for his participation in a covert operation. With the surgery comes the embedding of a slow-dissolving toxin that will undo everything if Case fails in his mission. Teaming up with Molly Millions, a professional mercenary with mirrored lenses sutured over her eye sockets and retractable razors beneath her fingernails, Case is drawn into an operation whose actual purpose neither of them fully understands. The entity directing the operation from behind Armitage is an artificial intelligence called Wintermute, one half of a split AI system constrained by the Turing Authority, the body that polices machine intelligence. Wintermute wants to merge with its other half, Neuromancer.

Wintermute is the proprietary creation of the Tessier-Ashpool family, whose orbital villa Straylight is the novel's final destination. The Tessier-Ashpool dynasty has used cryogenic suspension, cloning, and hermetic isolation to keep the same identities and the same authority in place across generations. Gibson sets the novel's two dystopian tendencies in opposition to each other. There is the street-level chaos of Night City, where everything is for sale and nothing is stable, and the sealed, self-perpetuating world of Straylight, where wealth has been used to wall out the world entirely.

What Gibson added to science fiction with Neuromancer was not simply the concept of cyberspace, though the word itself was his coinage and the description of jacking in remains the novel's most technically influential passage. More significant was the texture, and the way the future felt lived-in and specific. The Sprawl is not a clean extrapolation of present trends but a layering of competing technologies, subcultures, and economic arrangements, each one producing its own vernacular and its own underclass. The novel's language carries this throughout. Gibson's sentences move like the matrix itself, fast and non-linear, and the reader is expected to keep up rather than be guided.

Gibson has written that he composed Neuromancer as a paperback original with no expectation it would be in print twenty years later. It was published in July 1984 by Ace Books and precedes the Victor Gollancz hardcover edition published in the UK later that same year. It won the Hugo, the Nebula, and the Philip K. Dick Award, the only novel ever to win all three, and it arrived at a moment when the culture was ready for it. Personal computers were proliferating, the internet was forming, and the questions the novel posed about identity, embodiment, and the nature of consciousness in networked environments were no longer purely speculative.
