Idoru
Signed first edition, 1996
Idoru is the second novel in William Gibson’s Bridge Trilogy. Set in a near-future Tokyo where media systems and digital environments are deeply embedded in everyday life, the novel centers on Rez, a globally famous musician who announces his intention to marry Rei Toei, a virtual pop idol known as the Idoru. The announcement triggers widespread speculation and draws the attention of Colin Laney, a security analyst whose unique ability allows him to detect emerging patterns within vast streams of data.
Running alongside this narrative is the story of Chia McKenzie, a young member of a global fan network devoted to Rez’s band, who is sent to Tokyo to observe the situation firsthand. As Chia moves through a city shaped by pervasive media, artificial intelligence, and advancing nanotechnology, her experience begins to intersect with Laney’s work. Together, their perspectives trace a world in which identity, celebrity, and human intention are increasingly shaped by systems that operate at scales few individuals can fully perceive.
