Agency
Signed first edition, 2020
Agency is the second novel in William Gibson’s Jackpot Trilogy and functions as both a continuation of and a prelude to The Peripheral. The novel follows two intertwined storylines. One takes place in an alternate 2017 in which Hillary Clinton won the 2016 U.S. election. In this timeline, Verity Jane, a consultant in San Francisco, is hired to test an advanced AI avatar originally developed for military applications and now being adapted by a small startup.
The second storyline returns to the early twenty-second century, where survivors of the Jackpot possess the ability to observe and interact with alternate pasts, including Verity’s 2017. From this future vantage point, they observe and selectively intervene in this branch of history, attempting to avert the crises that led to collapse in other timelines.
