Agency

Signed first edition

Agency is the second novel in William Gibson's Jackpot Trilogy, and functions both as a prelude and a continuation of The Peripheral (2014). In Agencythe narrative navigates through two distinct story arcs. The first immerses readers in an alternate 2017 where Hillary Clinton triumphed over Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential Election. Within this backdrop, we meet Verity, a spirited young woman in the heart of San Francisco, deeply engrossed in testing a revolutionary avatar software, initially conceived by the military and now being refined by a nascent startup. Concurrently, a second narrative unfolds in the aftermath of a 22nd-century apocalypse, portraying individuals with the ability to peer into alternate past histories and even influence their directions, as is their goal with the alternate 2017. These interwoven storylines explore deeply the complex intertwining of technology and its unrelenting influence on human fate.
