The Book of Phoenix (2015) is a prequel to Who Fears Death, set in a near-future Manhattan where a corporation called LifeGen Technologies creates and confines genetically enhanced human beings in sealed towers for experimental purposes. Phoenix Okore, engineered with the ability to die and regenerate and to generate intense heat, escapes captivity following the death of her lover and eventually makes her way to Ghana, where her actions set in motion the catastrophic events that lead to the world of Who Fears Death. Shortlisted for the 2016 Arthur C. Clarke Award and winner of the 2018 Kurd Laßwitz Prize for Best Foreign Fiction.
