The Dreamfields (1976) by K. W. Jeter is set inside a US government facility in the California desert where juvenile delinquents are held in suspended animation while their dream selves wander a shared virtual small town. Ralph Metric, assigned to monitor the program, finds himself drawn into the darker implications of what is being done to its subjects. Jeter's second novel, and an early exploration of virtual consciousness that anticipates themes he would develop more fully in later work. Number 33 in the Laser Books series published by Harlequin, with cover art throughout the series by Kelly Freas.
Jeter is known for his dark, paranoid style and for his contributions to the Star Trek, Star Wars, and Blade Runner franchises. He is credited with coining the term steampunk in a 1987 letter to Locus, and was a close friend of Philip K. Dick, serving as the inspiration for the character Kevin in Dick's semi-autobiographical novel Valis.
