Signed first edition, 1998
Noir (1998) is set in a future Pacific Fringe city where debt has become the organizing principle of social life, including the debts of the dead, who can be resurrected as indentured labor to work off what they owed. Detective McNihil has had his eyes surgically altered to perceive the world in black and white, the visual grammar of classic film noir. The novel uses the genre's conventions to examine a society where corporate capitalism has run to its logical conclusion. Signed by Jeter on the title page.
